Totori is primarily a defensive character meant to take hits and sustain herself and her allies in the process. To help this, memorias with high defensive stats such as Together in the Snow or The Alchemists of Dusk will help tremendously with that while also offering some valuable effects in the form of party buffs or extra healing. The latter in particular is an often overlooked memoria, but the extra HP recovery granted by it will make Totori’s heals a lot stronger not only increasing her own survivability but also her teams.
All that said, Totori is much more than just a tank. Her own skills can significantly buff the magic skill damage of her allies so it’s not rare for her to be equipped with the Enhanced Damage Buff [A] trait in all her gear pieces. With that in mind, using a memoria that grants similar effects will empower her buffing potential even more, and it’s something that you should commonly aim to do.
There are several alternatives for this task, with Together in the Snow being the most balanced one as it also makes Totori a lot tankier. The effect itself is weaker in comparison, but against many enemies this buff can ramp up to be equal or stronger than others.
Other choices include Budding Girl without a Name, Our Masterpiece and To the Academy of Dreams!, each of them with different stats and accessibility. These 3 memorias don’t provide as many defensive stats but their effects are active at all times.
Another common choice among defenders is Feathers Fly on a Festive Day, a memoria that will increase your item gauge generation and enabling certain strategies. Defenders are often some of the best characters to equip these and Totori isn’t an exception. The only problem for her in particular is the Speed loss upon equipping it. She is already a fairly slow character so using this will certainly require you to equip a high Speed accessory to compensate. If she can’t act before your damage dealer, this item generation will go to waste.
And speaking of Speed, if going fast is what you need, any high Speed memoria will do since their effect won’t be active. If you have to choose, try to pick one with high defensive stats like It’s Time to Study! or The True Feelings You Can’t See. An alternative Further Still! will trade those defensive stats for extra damage for herself, but this is not recommended.
Gale Broom
While equipped to a Defender with Air affinity, reduces damage received by 8 ~ 11% when HP is 70% or higher.
This is a very powerful damage reduction effect that is easy to keep active thanks to her own HP sustain and the help from items like Herbal Shirt. It more than doubles traditional damage reduction effects, and stacks well with her own passive, turning big hits into manageable ones.
Serene Envoy’s Blade
While equipped to a Defender, reduces damage received from single-target attacks by 5 ~ 7%.
Heavy mitigation that is active at all times but only works against single-target attacks. This is often enough considering AoE damage is balanced around non-defenders, so these attacks do minor damage to them. Solid, cheap and accessible item that can be shared among all Defenders.
Stylish Broom
Boosts potency of buff effects given by 6 ~ 8%.
The only offensive alternative in her list of weapons, slightly improving the potency of her magic skill damage buffs and damage reduction passive. This is ok to use against enemies who don’t hit too hard, but the minor gain is rarely worth using in more modern, harder content.
Thýella Skoúpa
While equipped to a Defender with Air affinity, after using a skill, reduces own damage received by 6 ~ 8% for 1 attack.
Another mitigation oriented weapon, this time with a weaker effect that needs Totori to act to activate the effect. It has an advantage in that it can stack multiple times if Totori is not attacked between casts, but considering her role this is contradictory. This weapon is not bad, but Gale Broom is better.
Fortune’s Light
Reduces damage received by 5 ~ 6% when own HP is at 70% or higher.
Direct downgrade to Gale Broom, but much more accessible to newer players. This item is very cheap to make and is unlocked early in the game, making it a great placeholder weapon.
Herbal Shirt
When hit by an attack, restores 2 ~ 3% of max HP.
Absurdly strong piece of armor oriented to infinitely sustain hits. With a high base HP stat and the ability to permanently reduce the damage she takes every time she receives healing, this armor not only keeps her healthy but also quickly stacks her passive Duplicate Warmth buff. This heal will also be affected by recovery traits such as Recovery Boost [D], making it much stronger, and will be active from the start of the fight, not needing any action and not having any duration.
Phantom Armor Erfolg
While equipped to a character with Air affinity and full HP, reduces damage received by 9 ~ 12%.
Extremely strong damage mitigation oriented armor, providing a large damage reduction against all attacks when Totori is at full HP. Since she can heal herself after being hit, it’s not rare for her to immediately go back to full after being attacked, preserving this effect potentially forever. It requires her to act to keep her counter-heals active, however.
Skuller Coat
Boosts potency of buff effects given by 6 ~ 8%.
This piece is oriented to increase the power of her offensive buffs but it also marginally increases the damage mitigation from her passive. It’s the best and only offensive piece she can use and it’s her best in slot if she is strong enough to survive without the need for other alternatives. The extra gains are quite small, however, so I personally would not trade the safety provided by other armor pieces for this in most scenarios.
Angel Robe
While equipped to a character with Air affinity, reduces own damage received by 4 ~ 5%.
Another damage mitigation oriented armor, this time with a weaker effect but no special conditions. It’s a decently strong and easy to use alternative to reduce the damage she takes at all times.
Shadow Band
While equipped to a character with Air affinity, at the start of a wave, recovers own HP by 4 ~ 5% when hit by an attack for 5 attacks.
This works as an extra, more potent layer of Herbal Shirt, triggering up to 5 times. It helps Totori self sustain against fast acting enemies from the start of the fight, before she gets to act. This also helps her gain up to 5 stacks of her passive.
The only downside of this accessory is that it has 0 Speed, which can be a heavy deterrent in some setups where Totori needs to be faster, henceforth, this item is normally used with fast memorias to compensate this loss.
Resilient Headband
While equipped to a Defender with Air affinity, boosts all allies’ magic attack skill damage by 4 ~ 5%.
Offensive oriented accessory, synergizing well with her kit and desired traits. This effect is active at all times and doesn’t need her to act, which is good considering this item also gives no Speed.
It provides a massive HP boost.
Gale Force Ring
While equipped to a character with Air affinity, reduces damage received by 4 ~ 5%.
Quite strong mitigation oriented item, with no special conditions, active at all times. It’s a solid entry level item and well into the end game too for pure damage reduction, and provides a decently high Speed stat.
Cheap and accessible early in the game.
Angel Ribbon
Reduces damage received by 5 ~ 6% when own HP is at 70% or higher.
Extremely solid accessory that matches greatly with her self sustaining kit. This is one of the earliest items you can unlock in the game. It’s extremely cheap and serviceable too. Highly recommended for beginners.
Main Traits
- Recovery Boost [D] is her most important trait, massively boosting the potency of her heals on herself. It does not affect how much she heals others, but this alone can seriously boost her self sustain and survivability. Highly recommended to have in at least 2 pieces of gear, ideally all 3.
Situational Traits
- Her second trait slot is open for a lot options. Let’s check them out:
- Enhanced Damage Buff [A] is probably her ideal trait for most content, massively boosting the potency of all her magic skill damage buffs and similar gear pieces. This is highly recommended to have, especially against less threatening enemies. Of course, this is mostly useless when played with physical allies.
- All Recovery Boost will not affect the healing done by items like Herbal Shirt or Shadow Band, but it will affect the healing done by her Skill 2 triggers, including the one given to her allies. This goes well in heavy AoE fights as she can play as a pseudo healer.
- For extra mitigation, the Magic Resistance Up [Full] and Physical Resistance Up [Full] traits are insanely strong when matched with full hp or high HP mitigation gear. She can easily sustain these conditions too potentially keeping them permanently active. They do nothing while HP is not full, so proper strategy is required.
- Totori has skills that affect primarily magic teams, but she can still work as a pure tank/healer in physical teams.
- Thanks to her great tankiness and self sustain, she is one of the two defenders of choice to act as a replacement in off-affinity content, like for example Ice Tower, or any other tower where she would normally be at a disadvantage.
- She performs extremely well in Dungeons when using items like Shadow Band, absorbing a lot of punishment while staying healthy with no help from her teammates.
- Her Duplicate Warmth passive grants her a unique permanent damage reduction buff that stacks by 2% every time she receives healing, no matter how small, up to 20%. Every different trigger counts, including that from Herbal Shirt, Shadow Band, her own Skill 2 counterheal, party members’ heals, battle items, and more.
- Her Burst Skill will create a second instance of the same Duplicate Warmth, that can be stacked to up to 20% as well, for a total of 40% at max stacks. This new instance of the buff needs to be stacked from zero, regardless of the current amount of stack the original passive has. No more instances of this buff can exist, regardless of how many times Burst is used, meaning a max of 2 active Duplicate Warmth buffs can be had at any given time.
- With her non disruptive Skill 2 and AoE burst attack, she can work decently as a damage dealer for Air Tower stages that require AoE damage, if you don’t have a dedicated Attacker or if Attackers are penalized, such as Floor 24.
- Her Skill Power Up synthesis gift is one of the most sought after gifts in the game, not only because of the gift itself, but her colors connecting to a plethora of powerful synthesis options for a ton of strong trait combinations, including Critical Damage Up, Burst Skill Power, Enhanced Damage Buff [A], Skill Power Up, and many more. Max Awakening her as soon as possible is a great idea for both synthesis and combat!
- With the right itemization and against many weaker enemies, she is effectively immortal.
