Sophie is a debuffing defender with some of the most impressive defensive stats and a high Speed but no team wide nor personal damage mitigation. In a sense, she plays more like a support than a defender, as her own skills can significantly increase the damage and stun damage received by her enemies thanks to her all atribute resistance down effects. To complement this, skill damage buffing memorias combined with the Enhanced Damage Buff [A] trait in all her gear pieces will turn her into a semi buffer at expenses of her own survivability.
There are several alternatives for this task, with Profuse Blows being the most balanced one as it also makes Sophie a lot tankier. The effect itself is weaker in comparison, but against many enemies this buff can ramp up to be equal or stronger than others.
Other choices include Budding Girl without a Name, Our Masterpiece and To the Academy of Dreams!, each of them with different stats and accessibility. These 3 memorias don’t provide as many defensive stats but their effects are active at all times.
As a debuffing choice instead, A Yukata-Clad Sprint through the Steam is an impressive pick when playing with magic oriented teams, adding additional attribute resistance reductions for these 4 affinities and enabling her to use her trait slots in a more defensive way.
Another common choice among speedy defenders is Feathers Fly on a Festive Day, a memoria that will increase your item gauge generation quite drastically, enabling certain strategies. Defenders are often some of the best characters to equip these and Sophie, with her high Speed, is a prime candidate for it.
Serene Envoy’s Blade
While equipped to a Defender, reduces damage received from single-target attacks by 5 ~ 7%.
Heavy mitigation that is active at all times but only works against single-target attacks. This is often enough considering AoE damage is balanced around non-defenders, so these attacks do minor damage to them. Solid, cheap and accessible item that can be shared among all Defenders.
Fortune’s Light
Reduces damage received by 5 ~ 6% when own HP is at 70% or higher.
A more effective option against all type of attacks, including AoEs, but that will need some form of team healing or to spend turns sustaining the effect.
Training Path
Boosts potency of negative effects inflicted by 6 ~ 8%.
The only way she has to increase the potency of her buffs, exalting this role. It’s even better when used with the A Yukata-Clad Sprint through the Steam memoria.
Thunder Armor
While equipped to a character with Bolt affinity, after attacking, boosts enemy’s damage received by 4 ~ 5% for 2 attacks.
Pretty self explanatory. This armor adds an extra effect to all her existing ones. It’s the highest damage boost among all armors in most situations.
It can be unlocked early and it is cheap to make.
Herbal Shirt
When hit by an attack, restores 2 ~ 3% of max HP.
Bolt Defenders’ defensive itemization is terrible. There is no damage reduction armor pieces so, aside from the terrible Magic Plate, this is the only defensive-like armor they can use.
Hero’s Armor
When using magic skills, boosts potency of inflicted negative effects by 6 ~ 9%.
Offensive oriented piece, accessible now at all times via Revival events, this armor provides a moderate boost to the potency of Sophie’s negative effects, including attribute resistance down and debuffing memorias.
It’s weaker than Thunder Armor in the majority of cases.
Sloth Ring
While equipped to a Defender with Bolt affinity, after attacking, restores own HP by 0–7% depending on current HP. (Higher boost for lower HP, range: 100–25% HP)
A sustain oriented accessory. It does not increase her tankiness but heals her for an additional amount every time she acts. The effect adds up against enemies that are not an immediate threat, as she can keep herself up constantly with her own Skill 1.
The real reason to use this accessory over the others is the Speed granted by it, which no other relevant accessory provides.
King of Thunder Ring
While equipped to a character with Bolt affinity, reduces damage received by 4 ~ 5%.
Very basic but very strong and well balanced accessory, providing unconditional damage mitigation, decent Speed and decent HP. It is very cheap and easy to unlock too.
Medical Earring
While equipped to a Defender with Bolt affinity, at the start of battle, reduces all allies’ damage received by 2 ~ 3% for 3 attacks.
To slightly increase her teams’ survivability. This item is the only way Sophie can reduce damage taken by her allies, but by a small amount and for a limited amount of hits only.
Angel Ribbon
Reduces damage received by 5 ~ 6% when own HP is at 70% or higher.
Extremely solid accessory that matches greatly with her self sustaining kit. This is one of the earliest items you can unlock in the game. It’s extremely cheap and serviceable too. Highly recommended for beginners.
Main Traits
- Traditional, unconditional physical and magic resistances are the way to go for Sophie. She doesn’t have special gimmicks to stay at full HP often, so those specific traits are not great.
Situational Traits
- Her second trait slot is open for a lot options. Let’s check them out:
- Recovery Boost is a direct downgrade to Recovery Boost [D], so the latter is always better. It will increase the heal potency of her Skill 1 by a lot, and if she has Herbal Shirt or Sloth Ring equipped, it will also boost those. It can make a difference against many weaker enemies, but it’s not that great against more threatening ones.
- Enhanced Damage Buff [A] can be used if her memoria is highly ranked up. If not, this is almost worthless. It’s not a great choice nonetheless but it can be used.
- On her release Sophie was perhaps the most dominant character in the game, and she was for a very very long time. She is naturally tanky, contributes a lot and can be played with essentially any team at all. While her kit has faded noticeably compared to more modern alternatives, she is still a very solid character especially at enabling Breakers.
- All Attribute Resistance Down will not only increase the damage dealt by all allies, but also their stun damage. This is deep down the strongest aspect of her debuff as it can help quick stun enemies that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.
- Her effects last 2 attacks, so she can play well with other attacking debuffers and not clash with each other. In presence of non-disruptive allies, she can stack her own effects twice even.
- Increased damage taken debuffs, such as the one from Thunder Armor, synergize extremely well with attribute resistance reductions. This armor makes it perhaps the best choice in her list of options both as a tank or a semi-support.
- Her healing will increase as her HP decreases. Controlling the pace at which she casts her Skill 1, to do it only at the right times, will save her valuable turns.
- She is insanely strong in the early and mid game, until chapter 12+ where she starts to struggle surviving against certain bosses. Before that, she can single handedly play in every single team and against every single fight.
