Johanna is primarily a single target damage dealer, one that requires significant setup and preparation for a single big burst attack on a boss.
By far the strongest choice for this task is her own A Page in Friendship, massively boosting her burst skill damage and providing a high P.Atk stat. The Promise of a Return is another choice very slightly weaker (under the assumption of right traits in gear), providing her critical damage instead but a much lower P.Atk stat and Speed. This memoria has the advantage of being able to use the Enhance Damage Buff [A] trait instead of Critical Damage Up, but it strongly depends on how highly ranked up it is.
Other more traditional and easier to acquire memorias are Shoot for the Sky, Shippy, Set Sail!, and Lazy Afternoon, the latter only working against enemies weak to Slash, something she cannot normally accomplish by herself and will need team support to achieve.

It is possible to play Johanna in a more support-ish role, especially with her extremely unique AoE skill 1 and the Playing into Her Hand memoria, applying strong negative effects, reduced status resistance and also applying poison on all enemies not immune to it, at the same time, all aspects that can seriously enable characters like Lara: Queen’s Grace to deal high damage very quickly.

Crystal Rod

While equipped to an Attacker, boosts potency of buff effects received by 11 ~ 15%.

Despite having a lower base P.Atk stat than other weapons, the sheer amount of extra buff values you can gain from all team members, battle items and all effects combined thanks to its effect will vastly outperform the margin.
Regardless, always consider what team you are playing, what battle items you are using and how much you are actually getting from this increase before picking it.

Blade Knuckle

While equipped to an Attacker with Slash affinity, boosts burst skill damage by 13 ~ 18%.

Her strongest weapon when played as a main damage dealer when not playing around buffs or battle items. It tends to be weaker than Crystal Rod in most cases nonetheless.
Affects only her Burst Skill, which is her main source of damage.

Thorny Sigh

While equipped to an Attacker, after attacking, boosts targets’ damage received by 3 ~ 4% for 2 attacks.

Debuff oriented item, adding an extra debuff layer instead of improving other existing ones. It is weaker than Moonlit Twin Stars in the majority of scenarios, but when using Skill 2 this item is better.

Klinge Mähne

While equipped to an Attacker with Slash affinity, boosts skill damage by 9 ~ 12%.

Placeholder weapon. Very cheap and easy to unlock is a great early game alternative but it will be quickly outdated by others.

Layered Velvet – Slash

While equipped to a character with Slash affinity, boosts potency of buff effects received by 13 ~ 18%.

Best in slot armor piece when played as a damage dealer. It adds up to a ton of offensive and defensive benefits when played with buffs from allies and battle items.

Spirit Robe

Boosts status effect infliction rate by 14 ~ 20%.

Used for poison application only. To enable other characters’ gimmicks, this armor can be very handy. It will make her Skill 1 infliction rate almost guaranteed against enemies with 80% or less Poison resistance, and significantly increase the rate against enemies with higher resistance values than that.

Radiant Plate

Boosts potency of negative effects inflicted by 6 ~ 8%.

Debuff oriented armor, enhancing the potency of effects from gear pieces like Radiant Coronet or Thorny Sigh. Preferred to be used when assisting other characters instead of dealing damage herself. Really bad otherwise.

Origin Necklace: Slash

While equipped to an Attacker with Slash affinity, boosts burst skill damage by 17 ~ 25%.

Her strongest pure damage option, affecting only her Burst Skill. It only has +8 Speed, which might be insufficient to reach the Speed cap of 520 sometimes.

Idaten‘s Boots

While equipped to an Attacker with Slash affinity, boosts burst skill damage by 13 ~ 18%.

Weaker version of the Origin Necklace: Slash‘s same boost, but this time on a +12 Speed accessory. Sometimes worth the trade off in order to reach Speed thresholds that will boost the value of her passive skill.

Radiant Coronet

While equipped to a character with Slash affinity, after attacking, boosts enemy’s physical damage received by 5 ~ 6% for 2 attacks.

Intended to assist all kind of physical teams, this item applies an extra layer of increased physical damage taken with all her attacks. This effect can be boosted by increases to the potency of negative effects and, more surprisingly, by the Enhanced P./M. Resistance Down trait too.
Intended to be used as a supporting character instead of as a damage dealer, and works great with her Skill 1.

Vowed Ornament

While equipped to a character with Slash affinity, after making a critical attack, boosts target’s critical damage received by 10 ~ 14% for 2 attacks.

This accessory is highly situational, also used exclusively a supporting ally, requiring Johanna to land a critical hit over her enemies to apply the effect. It’s best used alongside characters like Wilbell: Witch in the Dark, to take advantage of her Critical panels, in fights that already include some of these panels themselves, or with other sources of Critical Rate buffs. Without these, the effect is very unreliable and not recommended to use.
The effect itself can stack up to twice and it’s equivalent to increasing the Critical Damage of other characters hitting this target, but this source is affected by increases to the potency of negative effects instead of the opposite.

Main Traits

  • As a main damage dealer, Burst Skill Power Up is your desired main trait. With her Burst Skill being her main source of damage, powering this up as much as we can is the call. Getting 3x of these is ideal.

Situational Traits

  • Her second trait slot is a lot more nuanced and depends on a lot of factors, primarily her memoria chosen and role in the team:
  • If playing as a damage dealer and we are equipped with any skill damage boosting memoria, we will build Critical Damage Up trait in 2x slots so balance out the excess. It is possible not to use any of this and only rely on teammates for this type of buff, but there will be a relatively major damage loss due to the imbalance.
  • The Enhanced Damage Buff [A] trait will be the chosen trait if we end up using Promise of a Return, but always keep in mind how highly ranked up it is. If rank 4 or higher, this trait is ideal.
  • Only when played as a supporting character, the Enhanced P./M. Resistance Down trait is more than just usable but recommended, dramatically boosting the power of her Skill 2 debuff and effects from items like Radiant Coronet.
  • Using additional Skill Power Up or similar traits is acceptable but, for the same reasons explained in bullet point 2, these are far from ideal.
  • Her Burst Skill has an insane 625% base potency, the highest in the game, but it does not have modifiers so it is still weaker than other characters with them.
  • The Critical Panel generated by her Burst Skill is meant to be… for herself. With high Speed and proper turn management, it is possible to have multiple turns in a row and come out of her Burst Skill into another skill right away.
  • It is possible to feed that panel to other allies as well, to either trigger positive effects from allies’ passives or by playing a more supportive role.
  • Johanna is the only character in the game with a Skill 1 that can hit all enemies at once. The damage and stun potencies of this skill are extremely low as a result, but the skill has several strong qualities and can apply on-hit effects from gear and memoria, which summed up to her insanely high Speed and low wait time can make her into a very powerful debuffer.
  • The status resistance reduction on her Skill 1 will apply before the Poison effect, meaning this attack will always have a high chance of landing versus any enemy not immune to it.
  • Enemies immune to Poison will never become afflicted by it, no matter what.
  • Poison can be stacked many times, dealing 2% of the afflicted target max HP per stack, at the start of their turns.
  • She can be a serious supporting character for Lara: Queen’s Grace, enabling her status effect reliant skills and applying powerful debuffs with the right gear and memorias.
  • Her Skill 2 is… weird. It requires a lot of setup, but for not great gains. It has a strong debuff and solid post-use buffs but does not deal great damage and it can take significant turns to recharge the Skill Charges to obtain the bonuses again, making this skill most likely a setup only ability.
  • Her passive skill 2 works in thresholds, increasing by 5% skill damage every 12 points of Speed gained, starting at 0% with 280 Speed, and up to 100% skill damage at 520 Speed. The Speed is capped, but the skill damage buff is not, meaning it can be affected by Enhanced Damage Buff [A] trait and buff potency effect to boost this amount to much higher values.
  • Her Synthesis Gift is crazy strong, with 3 powerful traits and color combos all around. She is perfect to craft:
