The Promise of a Return memoria is Marie’s ultimate memoria. With the highest M.Atk stat and up to a ridiculous 100% critical damage this is the strongest damage boost she can get. Just keep in mind this memoria will drastically lower her Speed stat making her even slower than she already is, which is a relatively positive thing in competitive content like Roman’s Tournament, and when using Initiative effects. An alternative to deal with this issue is Dance into the New Year, with slightly lower M.Atk and critical damage, but higher Speed. Any of these memorias, at a high enough rank (usually rank 4+) will enable Marie to use Enhanced Damage Buff [A] trait in her gear for great results.
Skill damage alternatives include Smiles Brighter than the Sun, a memoria that only works against enemies weak to Ice which Marie cannot create for herself, effectively forcing her to play exclusively against these enemies or rely on teammates. Starbirth Festival Night and Endless Discoveries on the other hand are both effectively identical on Marie and have no conditions attached but provides a slightly smaller bonus. Additionally, the Time Just for Two memoria provides the exact same bonus than the previous two, requiring however for Marie to be over a certain amount of HP, but tends to be much easier to rank up.
Using any of these these will most likely require you to add 2x Critical Damage Up traits to hear gear to compensate.
For starters or players with no access to anything of the above, always prioritize equipping a 31.25% M.Atk memoria regardless of its effect. If you still don’t have any of these, the SR rarity Following in Your Footsteps memoria is a great starting option. with moderately high M.Atk and a small boost to magic skill damage.
Crystal Rod
While equipped to an Attacker, boosts potency of buff effects received by 11 ~ 15%.
Despite having a lower base M.Atk stat than other weapons, the sheer amount of extra buffs you can gain from all team members, battle items and all effects combined thanks to its effect will vastly outperform them.
Regardless, always consider what team you are playing, what battle items you are using and how much you are actually getting from this increase. If you are not playing around buffs, then the Tome of Answers: Ice could be better.
Tome of Answers: Ice
While equipped to an Attacker with Ice affinity, boosts critical damage by 20 ~ 28%.
Big boost to M.Atk and critical damage. This weapon is immensely strong, but now slightly outclassed by Crystal Rod in almost every scenario. If you don’t have access to it though, this is your weapon.
Fortune Staff
While equipped to an Attacker, boosts critical damage of single-target attacks by 17 ~ 24%.
Direct downgrade to Tome of Answers: Ice, providing a weaker effects and less M.Atk, but being much more accessible and cheaper to make. Solid alternative.
Sunshine Fishing Rod
While equipped to a character with Ice affinity, boosts skill damage by 12 ~ 17% when attacking a weakness.
Decent item with a good boost to skill damage but only when attacking enemies weak to Ice. Marie cannot create this weakness for herself, so she will rely on teammates to do so, or use this exclusively in these types of fights.
Outclassed by items above but usable weapon.
Cold Hammer
While equipped to an Attacker with Ice affinity, after using a skill, boosts own M. ATK by 2 ~ 3% for 2 turns and boosts own M. DEF by 2 ~ 3% for 2 attacks.
Unlocked relatively early in the game, this ramp up effect is intended to be weak at the start and become strong as the fight progress, making the user hit harder and become bulkier against magic attacks.
Silver Thread Armor
Boosts potency of buff effects received by 9 ~ 12%.
Ice affinity does not have an Ice exclusive buff potency armor (at least for now) so the next best thing to use is this. Despite the reduced value, it’s still much stronger than any direct effect she can get from other options, all things considered.
Strife Shirt
While equipped to an Attacker with Ice affinity, boosts skill damage by 5 ~ 6% and critical damage by 9 ~ 12%.
It’s rare that an armor (or any piece) provides both types of boosts. This armor is really strong for how cheap it is to make, and something to consider if that elusive Silver Thread Armor doesn’t happen.
Sunshine Swimsuit
While equipped to an Attacker with Ice affinity, after a party member uses a battle item, boosts own skill damage by 17 ~ 24% for 1 turn. Doesn’t Stack.
For OTK clears only. The boost provided is massive but it will only occur after using battle items. This is perfect for fast, one cycle kills in turn 5 when Marie gets her first action, but really bad otherwise.
Pagoniá Smókin
While equipped to an Attacker with Ice affinity, boosts Skill 2 damage by 13 ~ 19%.
An alternative to Sunshine Swimsuit. Also designed for fast clears but with a weaker and permanent effect if the fight extends. It only affects her Skill 2, which is actually not a bad thing on Marie. It’s much harder to unlock and more expensive to craft.
Daylight
While equipped to an Attacker with Ice affinity, after using a skill, boosts own M. ATK by 5 ~ 6% for 2 turns.
Stat boosts are much stronger than skill damage or critical boosts, but they have fallen slightly out of favor because of buff potency pieces. This is still a solid piece of gear, and can be unlocked early in the game.
Fancy Ring
While equipped to an Attacker with 70% or higher HP, after attacking, boosts own skill damage by 11 ~ 16% for 1 turn.
Strong choice for Marie, usually stronger than the Origin Necklace – Ice as it affects both her skills, but with an HP condition attached. It’s an extra category recipe too, so it’s hard to make.
Ambrosia Garland
While equipped to a character with Ice affinity, after attacking, boosts own magic attack skill damage by 3 ~ 4%. (MAX 15 ~ 20%)
Designed for longer fight this item has the potential to outperform others, but requires ramp up.
Orphic Ring: Ice
While equipped to an Attacker with Ice affinity, boosts skill damage by 9 ~ 12%.
Good budget alternative for beginners. This item is strong enough to carry you early and mid game. It’s cheap and easy to unlock too.
Origin Necklace – Ice
While equipped to an Attacker with Ice affinity, boosts burst skill damage by 17 ~ 25%.
The biggest boost Marie can get, but only for her Burst Skill. This is almost never desirable but if planning around this skill alone, this item is a no brainer.
Main Traits
- Skill Power Up and Skill 2 Power Up traits offer essentially the same bonus buff, except the latter has a higher value and does not affect Marie’s Burst Skill. This is normally an ok trade-off since both skills have the same potency, but the Burst utilities and other considerations like use of specific battle items will still force Marie to use her Burst sometimes.. The hard part is that this trait is currently not possible to be matched with Enhanced Damage Buff [A], making regular Skill Power Up trait a more comfy choice.
- Single Attack Power Up is essentially the same as Skill Power Up. It affects all her skills but it’s also harder or impossible to match with other traits in the secondary slot.
- Ideally you should get at at least 4 of these traits across her 6 trait slots, for a total of 100% Skill Power. Going above this will reduce the effective value of the trait, but going below will be a much more drastic drop in damage. In general, you almost never want less than 100%.
Situational Traits
- Her second trait slot can include additional Skill Power Up traits or ideally some of the next ones:
- The Enhanced Damage Buff [A] trait is ONLY good if you have access to a high ranked critical damage memoria like Promise of a Return or Dance into the New Year. 2x of this trait will double the critical damage given by this memoria and the skill damage buffs given by her Burst Skill and any buff from gear she has. If you don’t have this memoria or not at a high enough rank, this trait is not worth using.
- Critical Damage Up is the most basic secondary trait to build. It works great in any conditions and doesn’t require much min maxing or thought. You only want a maximum of 2x of these.
- Ice Damage Boost and Magic Damage Boost are ok traits to have early and mid game, but they are much weaker compared to anything above so do not over invest in these and simply use them as stepping stones to reach better traits later on.
- Marie is the owner of one of, if not THE highest base damage potency Skill 2 in the game, at 500% plus some built-in critical damage. This critical damage bonus essentially makes her Skill 2 stronger than her Burst Skill for damage purposes alone, a skill that also has the same 500% potency at max rank but no extra boosts.
- Speaking of max potency, her Skill 2 is at 500% even at 3 stars, while her Burst only reaches that potency when she is max awakened. Something to consider when picking what ability to use.
- Battle items like Drachen Elixir and Ancestral Doctrine will still make her Burst Skill stronger. She actually prefers using items like Frozen Ointment to boost all her skills equally, but for a reduced gain.
- The tremendous power of her Skill 2 comes with a downside. After using this skill, Marie will debuff herself for 30% of her skill damage. This reduction is actually a 30% flat cut to all damage she does for the next 2 turns, so it is extremely weakening. However…
- This debuff is a negative effect, and she can remove her own negative effects or even become immune to them in a multitude of ways, including:
- Alternating Skill 1 and Skill 2 will boost the critical rate of Skill 2 and remove the negative effect. You can effectively keep alternating these skills forever and never suffer from any downside and not needing any other form of critical rate from allies.
- Thanks to her passive skill, killing an enemy with Skill 2 will automatically remove all negative effects from herself at the start of her next turn, as if she never had it to begin with. This activates after negative panels applications so she will remove the weakening effects from those as well, and any negative effect applied by enemies before that. It will also increase the critical rate of her next attack by 100%, so chaining enemy eliminates any downside and gets her ready to continue doing so afterwards for free crits, totally undisrupted. This is the number 1 most efficient way to play her.
- After using her Burst Skill, she will cleanse herself from all negative effects and status effects and become immune to negative effects afterwards for 3 turns. Not attacks, turns. This means no negative effect will affect her in any way, including enemy effects, negative panels, or her own debuff. She will not become immune to status effects, however.
- She benefits immensely from Elie: Cheesecake Connoisseur‘s Leader Skill, gaining the initiative effect and a massive 50% M.atk stat. The initiative effect alone can enable a lot of crazy shenanigans, some of which you can check in the video down below.
- Klaudia: Moonlit Beach is another great assisting Leader Skill and character for her.
- If no other sources of critical rate are present, it’s perfectly viable to start the fight with a Skill 1 on her first turn, and chaining kills after that to preserve the buff.
- The critical rate increases given by her Skill 1 and passive are categorized as buffs. This means her attacks are not necessarily guaranteed to crit when in presence of reductions to buff potencies.
