Nio is a Defender fully dedicated to mitigate and restore damage, with no offensive tools in her kit. That makes her equipped memoria the only possible way she has to boost allies’ damage. Although it is possible to do this with memorias like Budding Girl without a Name or Our Masterpiece, this is not Nio’s normal role so it’s mostly unnecessary.
Equipping more defensive oriented memorias will not only boost her stats and tankiness, but also make her mitigation stronger. Such is the case of Dress-Up Outing!, a simple memoria that enhances all buffs given by its wearer. In Nio’s case, this includes the powerful damage reduction given by her Skill 2, but also Skill 1 and stats on her passive. Against heavy AoE fights, this is the best alternative to protect her team.
Nio’s main gimmick involves intercepting counterattacks for allies. Almost all of these attacks are Strike or Bolt types, from golem and jellyfish type enemies. The When Dolls Dream has amazing physically defensive stats, and a flat chance to completely avoid strike type attacks, making it perfect against these types of enemies.
For last, item gauge generation memorias work great on Nio thanks to her high base Speed. She will be able to carry these without any considerable penalty, and in the case of Feathers Fly on a Festive Day, match greatly with her kit as she needs to regularly use Skill 1 to keep her effects up, generating more gauge out of this than other characters.
Starker Wille
While equipped to a Defender with Strike affinity, reduces own damage received by 5 ~ 7%.
Powerful and unconditional damage reduction passive for herself. It’s very strong and one of the most desirable choices for tanking heavy hits and counterattacks for others.
Forest Bell
While equipped to a character with Strike affinity, boosts potency of buff effects given by 9 ~ 12%.
Buff potency effects will affect the damage reduction buff from her Skill 2, making this weapon the perfect choice to protect her allies against heavy AoE fights.
Flourish Heart
While equipped to a Defender, after using a skill, restores 3 ~ 4% of own HP.
In absence of other forms of healing in her team, this could make the difference. With her high Speed and needing to use Skill 1 often, it can ramp up significantly.
Better used with appropriate recovery traits.
Metal Stirrer
While equipped to a Defender with Strike affinity, after using a skill, reduces all allies’ damage received by 1 ~ 2% for 1 attack.
It aims to do the same as Forest Bell but with a slightly lesser increase. It’s an ok early game weapon but it’s strictly worse.
Herbal Poncho
While equipped to a Defender with Strike affinity, reduces damage received from single-target attacks by 7 ~ 10%.
Massive damage reduction effect for herself, working only against single-target attacks. All counterattacks fall in this category so there is no downside to this armor when wanting to absorb heavy punishment for the team.
Phantom Leather Mail
While equipped to a character with Strike affinity, when hit by an attack, restores own HP by 4 ~ 5%.
Another self sustain oriented item. It is good at keeping Nio’s HP healthy against many weaker enemies, but against hard hitting bosses this doesn’t work great.
Skuller Coat
Boosts potency of buff effects given by 6 ~ 8%.
Another piece meant to be used for AoE protection. Buffing the effect of her Skill 2, this will help protect allies against these attacks instead of enhancing her own survivability against single-target hits.
Battle Amulet
While equipped to a Defender with Strike affinity, reduces damage received by 8 ~ 11%.
Absurdly powerful self mitigation item, the highest in her arsenal. It has no conditions and a massive HP stat, but no Speed. Luckily, Nio is fast enough to work just fine even with that small penalty.
Chronicle Mark – Strike
While equipped to a character with Strike affinity, reduces damage received by 4 ~ 5%.
Being much weaker on the defensive, this is a self mitigation alternative with at least some Speed stat in it, if she needs it.
It is unlocked very early, and it is very cheap and easy to make so it is a solid entry level item to get.
Main Traits
- Nio does not have any reliable form of self healing to help her maintain a high HP level, so full HP traits do not work great with her. Traditional, base level resistances do, mitigating all damage received from all sources. These are the most basic tanking oriented traits and will work fine at any point in the game, but will underperform against more specific types of enemies, where you would ideally want to pick traits from the section below:
Situational Traits
- Many of the strongest physical attacks correspond to this type, especially counterattacks from enemies like Golem types or Beast types. Almost all of these enemies use exclusively these attacks, making the Strike Resistance Up trait a great mitigation tool.
- You have not played the game yet if you’ve not raged to the annoying Jellyfish type enemies that swarm the content. Excluding Red Jellyfish enemies, these pests almost always counterattack with a powerful Bolt attack of their own. They also belong to the Aquatic category, so both Bolt Resistance Up and Resistance vs. Aquatics can neutralize their damage output completely while keeping your team safe.
- Nio does not have a natural passive aggression to redirect attacks on herself like most Defenders do, so enemies can ignore her and directly attack other allies.
- If Nio has a Protection effect on her, any single-target attack directed at one of her allies will be intercepted by her instead. This includes regular attacks, counterattacks and also Aimed attacks that normally bypass Defender’s aggression. She will also intercept debuffs and abilities that do not deal damage.
- Nio can only cover allies for as many times as Protection stacks she has left.
- While the tooltip in-game indicates that the Protection effect lasts for a set number of turns, this is not true. It lasts a set number of interceptions instead. Nio’s turns will not consume the duration, and this effect will instantly run out after intercepting 3 consecutive attacks, regardless of turns taken.
- Attacks that are directed at Nio will not consume a Protection stack. AoE attacks will also not consume any, only effective interceptions do. This can be clearly seen by an animation of Nio running in front of an ally to cover them, indicating one stack of the effect has been used.
- Multiple Protection effects can be active at the same time, but intercepting an attack will take away 1 stack from all of them so it is possible to refresh the duration of the effect while another instance of it still remains, but it cannot go over 3 stacks.
- Buff prevention negative effects will block this effect from applying on Nio, neutralizing her completely.
- She does not work great against many enemies at a time, as her Protection effects will likely run out too fast for her to consistently reapply it.
- On the other hand, she works very well against strong, solitary bosses.
- Strike Resistance Up and Bolt Resistance Up traits will turn commonly aggressive and powerful enemies into complete pushovers. Golem and Aquatic type enemies often use exclusively these types of attacks and a well-built Nio will basically take no damage from them while covering allies.
- Her Regen effect is categorized as a buff granted to allies so it will not be affected by Recovery traits. It is also not affected by buff potency changes.
- Her Synthesis Gift is very unique but also extremely niche. It’s main trait only affects a handful of characters, and it’s not really used in many cases as its effect only impacts Defenders.
